How to make iPhone GPS work in no-internet & no-cell signal Region

by puercaeli 2009. 7. 3.

Having got iPhone as a multi purpose device,

I was extremely sad to find that iPhone GPS to be non-functional in Korea. After series of test and process of elimination, I was able to make to make it work. This required a bit of series of little tricks... Note about plane mode: Whilst Apple claims that WIFI + GPS combination can be used in iPhone to locate position, this is NOT the case. This only seems to work in the country where WIFI AP has been associated with GPS positions. So this would not work in planes etc. Note about requiring phone mode: It appears that this requirement is the more likely to be a bug.
Apple probably did not think about the situation where there is WIFI signal(with no GPS association) and GPS signal. this can be kind of confirmed by the fact that iPhone not acquiring location info despite the clear GPS signal and clear WIFI info. And also another error (somehow switching 3G on mucking up the location service) seems to make using iPhone as stand alone GPS device more difficult. 1.REGARDLESS of the cell reception, DO NOT change the iPhone into plane mode. Make sure WIFI is turned ON(again you don't need to be connected to AP) 2. TURN OFF the 3G Reception 3. Open any application that requires the location service. Make sure you are in open area to receive GPS satellite signal. It should pick up your lat and longitude 4. Now you can turn on the plane mode ONLY IF you are connected to wifi. IMG_0054
