Prior to October 2007, Korean Macbook Pro was limited to the 130Mbps in 802.11n mode. This was due to the regulatory restriction limiting certain frequency. Apparently UK has similar law in place to date still and also limited in speed. However, Korean regulatory body removed this ban since October. Still, i appears Apple seems to unabashedly ship the dwindled version of 802.11n.

One forum threads show Apple Korea seems to have varied response from regulation still exists(or changed law still does not allow the 300Mbps despite other companies such as Netgear advertising for 300Mbps capbility) to the issue is still being discussed(What needs to be discussed when the regulation itself very clearly allows 300Mbps speed). What is more annoying is they never advertised this fact and even claims 5x speed gain compared to 802.11g(which is at least 270Mbps) on their product website.

To resolve this issue, I have to go to Apple Store located in Sydney. I showed that clearly speed was limited on the basis of non-existing regulation and I demanded the new Airport Extreme card in different region as this is the only way to solve this issue. It took nearly an hour long phone call with Apple Care before they approved of the fact(Probably my phone bill means I could have got one by myself and do the self repair...). Finally I got it replace and voila! it is doing 300Mbps now.

Now, 300Mbps is fast but not compatible with iPod Touch, so chances are I may still use it 130Mbps(Fast enough for time machine and watching videos hooked up to Airport Extreme) but who wants to have dwindled machine for no reason?

2007년 10월 이전까지는 한국향 맥북프로를 포함한 모든 맥은 법규 때문에 802.11n 사용시에도 속도가 130Mbps로 제한되어있었습니다. 영국도 유사한 법규 현재까지도 속도제한이 걸려있다고 합니다. 단 한국의 경우 작년 10월이후로 규정이 완화 되어있에도 불구하고 속도제한이 걸린체로 애플이 제품이 유통하고 있다는 것이 제 본인의 맥과 여러 포럼글들을 통해 확인 되었습니다.

이 포럼글들에 의하면 애플 코리아의 답변은 바뀐 규정도 300Mbps를 지원 하지 않는다에서 부터(타 업체는 버젓히 300 Mbps를 지원하는데도) 아직 애플과 협상중이라(규정이 바뀌었는데 무엇을 더 협상하겠다는 건지) 답변까지 다양한 답변이 있었다 합니다. 더 울화통 터지는 사실은 여러 맥의 '무선'란에도 종래 방식(즉 802.11g)보다 최저 5배이상 빠른 속도(즉 적어도 270 Mbps)라고 계속 광고해오고 있으며 전혀 속도제한에 대한 언급이 없다는 사실입니다.

제가 이문제를 해결하기 위해서는 애플스토어에 가서 맥 지니어스와의 상담뒤 다시 애플케어와 한시간에 육박하는 전화(이것 때문에 나온 전화값을 감안하자면 제가 고치는 것이 더욱 쌌을지도...)끝에 에어포트 카드를 현재 제가 있는 지역인 'Asia Pacific'지역으로 교체 받을 수 있었습니다. 이 이후에는 당연스럽게도 300Mbps가 나오더군요..

물론 아이팟 터치를 동시에 사용하는 관계로 130Mpbs 802.11g호환 모드로 사용할 일이 더 많겠지만 똑같은 돈 내고 누가 반쪽짜리 성능을 원하겠습니까? (참고로 130Mbps모드에서도 에어디스크로 비디오 보기 타임머신 백업등은 가능하긴 합니다.)

한국에서 2007년 10월이후에 맥을 구매하신분들에게 참조가 되었길 바랍니다.

Multicast Rate를 최대로 해주시고, 'Use Wide Channels'를 활성화 시켜주시기 바랍니다.

Note: Multicast rate can increase the speed but reduces the range significantly. Wide channel must be used to achieve the 300Mbps connection speed(Country does not matter unless UK)

If you have set Airport as above and boot your mac using installation disk one, then after initial few steps select 'Network Utility' from 'Utilities' from the menu bar. If the network device corresponding to the Airport shows 130Mbps it is likely that your Airport Extreme Card is limited to that speed by hardware not software.

주의: 멀티캐스트 옵션은 속도를 더 배가 시킬수는 있지만 전파 도달거리를 현저하게 저하 시킨다는 단점이 있습니다. 300Mbps를 사용하시기 위해서는 '와이드 채널'까지만 체크해주시면 됩니다.

만약에 애플 수리점에서(특히 이사실을 모르는 해외 수리점) 이 속도제한을 증명하려면 위의 세팅의 에어포트와(가능하면 비 영국 제품) 보유하시는 맥제품을 같이 가저가셔서, 구입할때 받으신 인스톨 디스크 1 으로 부팅하신다음, 일단 처음 한두 화면은 뛰어넘으시고. 그 다음에 메뉴바가 나타나면 '유틸리티'에서 '네트워크 유틸리티'를 선택하시고 에어포트에 해당하는 네트워크 어댑터를 선택하신뒤 연결 속도를 보여 드리시면 됩니다. 이 방법으로 하드웨어적인 이유로 속도가 제한 된것을 증명할 수가 있습니다.
