UPDATE: It is possible to go from backing up on Ethernet to Backing Up on USB but not the other way around. As long as you start backing up with ethernet way you connect to your external HDD does not matter.

네트워크로 백업 한뒤 USB로 바꾸는 것은 상관이 없군요. 즉 호환성을 유지하고 싶으시면 처음에 이더넷과 같은 네트워크로 백업 하신뒤 그다음부터는 USB나 네트워크중 취양에 맞으시는 걸로 하시면 되겠습니다.

As I have mentioned earlier, I recently purchased Airport Extreme. One of the reason for this purchase was wireless back up feature. Now I have been backing up using USB external HDD. Now when I connected this HDD to Airport Extreme, it was trying to create new back up folder; not knowing reason why I consulted Apple Genius Bar with no answer. Then I cam across this article on Apple insider which states due to the multiple user nature of Wireless backup, it is backed up differently to the direct USB back up. As such, USB back up and wireless(or Ethernet) backup method is incompatible. Another mystery solved.

여러분도 잘 아시다시피 최근에 에어포트 익스트림을 구매 했습니다. 구매 사유중의 하나가 무선으로 백업을 하기 위한 것이였는데요, 예전에는 USB 외장 하드를 직접 컴퓨터에 연결해 백업을 했었는데 이 것을 에어포트 익스트림에 연결하니 무선 백업이 안되더군요. 그래서 지니어스 바에 가보았지만 답변은 무, 그래서 잘 찾아보니 애플 인사이더의 글중 USB와 무선(혹은 이더넷)을 사용한 백업은 백업방식이 다르다는 군요(네트워크 백업은 다중 사용자의 백업을 해야 하는 경우를 감안해야 하기때문이라는 군요).
