에어뉴질랜드 자트로파식물 이용한 생태연료 747에 시험 예정; Air New Zealand to test Jatropha based biofuel

에어뉴질랜드가 버진사가 했던 시험과 유사하게 자사의 747을 이용해서 생태연료를 시험한다고 합니다. 시험 비행은 엔진 1개만 이 연료를 사용하며 오클랜드에서 행해질 예정이라고 합니다. 그에 앞서 인증을 위해 R&R에서도 지상 실험을 한다고 합니다.

이 자트로파 식물과의 씨앗이 기름 함량이 많고 세계각지 척박한땅에서도 잘 자란다고 합니다. 또한 에어 뉴질랜드가 이 식물을 사용한 이유는 옥수수와 같이 식자재에 영향을 미치는 일이 없기 때문이라고 합니다.(물론 가격도 당연히..) 또한 에어 뉴질랜드는 최소 지난 20년간 숲이였거나 자연적인 들판이 아니고 기존 식용 식물을 재배하기가 불가능한 땅에서만 재배 하는 식물만을 사용할예정이며 빗물만을 이용해 자연재배한다고 합니다. 수입은 아프리카와 인도에서 한다고 합니다.

아무래도 생태연료가 점점 대중화 될듯합니다, 개인적으로는 조금더 다른 방법을 연구 했으면 좋겠지만(이 것도 땅을 사용하는 것이니 아무리 자연재배 하더라도 무리가 가는 것은 사실) 새로운 연구가 실용화되는 시점까지는 이것도 그다지 나쁜듯 하지는 않습니다.

Following the Virgin, Air New Zealand(ANZ)is set to test new biofuel based on Jatropha family of plants in one of its B747. Test flight will have one of its 4 engines running on biofuel and will be done around Auckland. Prior to this flight however will be ground test by R&R for certification purpose.

Jatropha plant is known to have high-oil contents and can be grown virtually anywhere in the world as it can withstand even the meager condition. ANZ has chosen this as it does not affect the food market unlike corn based ethanol(and of course cheaper price). ANZ also requires its growers to find the land that was not a forest or virgin grass land for the last twenty years and land that is not ideal for food crops. Further, ANZ prohibited its growers from using anything other than rainwater. Jatropha plant is expected to be imported from India and few African countries.

It appears that companies will begin to have serious look biofuels. Personally however I like to see some solution that does not deplete the soil or lithosphere in general. However, meanwhile until such technology arrives this could well be the best solution.
