With so much focus on renewable fuel, recently one firm claimed to have developed the alternative method of producing diesel from algae. Ethical issue of obtaining oil from live organism aside, this also seem to be not doing much to ever increasing NO2 level and other carbon byproducts like ethanol solution.
Meanwhile, Boeing has recently claimed that they will be supporting this fuel for very obvious reason; this will negate Boeing from having to develop completely new propulsion mechanism and thus totally different airplane. Boeing has already tested biofuel using Virgin's 747 and Air Newzeland is soon to follow the same suit.
If you are wondering why it is always 747 and never 777 or other twin-engine planes being tested, it is because 747 has four engines and thus can still operate with minimal effect with one engine shut down(usually biofuel testing is done on single engine for safety purpose).
