Inactive RAM - The not so free part of the RAM.

by puercaeli 2010. 12. 12.

I was researching into RAM a bit cause I was thinking of getting 8GB ram,
turns out my computer had more than enough RAM.

Here is the story:
My mac for some unknown reason has been tying down all ram 'inactive ram'.
Many claim inactive ram = free ram. But from my and many others experience
this does not seem to be the case. If you seem to suffer from slow performance even with seemingly plenty of RAM.

1. Find 'Activity Monitor' and check 'System Memory' tab on the bottom. See if too much is tied up in inactive state.

2. If it is, use one of the following to convert inactive to free.

a)Open 'Disk Utility' and perform 'repair disk permission'.

b)(to do this; first install CHUD tools, google it and you will find it) Open 'Terminal' and then type 'purge' this will convert most if not all inactive to free memory. This method may create temporary halt.

Hope this helps... at some point =)
